The Antlers & Arrows Charity 3D Archery Shoot, in memory of Firefighter Johnny Thomas, was started by a group of Prince William County, VA Firefighters.Johnny passed away from Lung Cancer in January of 2006.Johnny was an avid bow hunter and loved to get people involved with the outdoors. Johnny's wife, Mickey, brought up the idea of an archery shoot to bring friends, family and fellow firefighters together to raise money and support those in need. It was also the perfect way to remember those no longer with us and share stories. The idea caught on very quickly and the group went forward with planning. Click here for full story...

Fire Velo Returns to Los Angeles
Cheers could be heard all over the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, July 31, as Fire Velo cyclists, flanked by apparatus from the Santa Monica Fire Department, rode in to complete the final leg of their 500-mile journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The crowd was filled with the riders’ families and friends, along with members of our Department, including Chief Deputy Daryl Osby (a national Fire Velo member himself), firefighters from neighboring fire departments and several others who just happened to be out enjoying the day at the pier. The returning riders were treated to a delicious barbeque lunch sponsored by Firehouse Chefs, as well as live entertainment from the band, GR3.
USFA and NIOSH Initiate Study of Cancer among Firefighters
Contact: USFA Press Office: (301) 447-1853
Emmitsburg, MD. – The United States Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are partnering on a study to examine the potential for increased risk of cancer among firefighters due to exposures from smoke, soot, and other contaminants in the line of duty. "There is a need to have a comprehensive study of the incidence of cancer in the fire service involving objective medical and epidemiological oversight. We have lost too many firefighters from this disease," said USFA Administrator Kelvin J. Cochran. “USFA is pleased to work with NIOSH in this initiative."
California Professional Firefighters has proposed legislation expanding access to firefighter cancer presumptions, continuing three decades of leadership on the issue
